Tim Noakes, Director of the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town, believes that obesity is caused by eating addictive and refined foods that are high in carbohydrates instead of fats. Speaking at the 2013 Think!Fest lecture series, Noakes said that “people are fed by a food industry that pays no attention to food and cured by doctors who pay no attention to medicine”. He said that the cause of obesity is the processed food industry and the blame is on the people affected.
